Not all of us can have slim, delicate faces and cheekbones that stand out and define us. Some of us are blessed with slightly rounder faces and full cheeks that bunch up when we smile. If you’re one of the countless women with a round or chubby face then don’t despair. If anything, you should be shouting for joy. Personally I think chubby faces are much more attractive than slimmer faces – there’s something about the way they light up when they smile and a cuteness about them that is otherwise lose.
While faces like this can be a blessing, if you don’t know how to wear you hair with them they can also be a curse. Wearing your hair the wrong way can often make the roundness of your face stand out a little too much, making you look spherical and hiding your cuteness. Don’t panic, I’m not contradicting myself and saying chubby faces are a bad thing – I still firmly believe the opposite – it’s just a case of knowing how to wear your hair, what lengths suit you and what styles you should ultimately avoid. With that in mind, here’s my ultimate list of 20 hairstyles that suit round and chubby faces…
1. Mix Up Your Layers
One of the best ways to make your chubby face look fabulous and a little less round is to frame it with various lengths of layers. Get your stylist to add lots of short layers, medium layers and long layers to give you a textured effect. This will take focus away from your face and is great because it’s a style you can wear flawlessly whether you have wavy, curly or straight hair.
2. Bob
I simply love the bob style – namely because as well as looking fabulous it works great on women of all shape faces when altered slightly. If you’ve got a round or chubby face, try getting a chin length bob. This will call attention to your jaw line and will make your bone structure stand out. The curve of the style, whether you wear it wavy or straight, will frame your face giving it an almost angelic look.
3. Change Your Parting
A classic middle parting may look great but they tend to draw attention to the cheek area, making your cheeks look fuller and rounder – not great if you already have a round face. To combat this, experiment with different partings to see what effect they have on your look. A side parting always looks fab but you could also try wearing a zig-zag parting for extra oomph.
4. Curl Your Hair
We all love straight hair but I’m sorry to say for those of you with a round or chubby face it’s a style best avoided. You may think the look slims down your face but in reality it simply draws attention to your round cheeks. Try wearing your hair in loose waves to give your hair volume, this look will help to slim down those cheeks instantly.
5. Sweeping Bangs
When trying to make your face look slimmer I’m afraid that simple bangs wont cut it. They’ll end up resting on your cheeks and drawing far too much attention to them. Ask your stylist to give you some side swept bangs – this will help to draw attention to your eyes, highlighting them and drawing attention away from the roundness of your face.
6. Pixie Haircut
You probably think I’m crazy but trust me when I say that pixie cuts can be a blessing for women with round faces. Yes, you’re showing off your ‘problem area’ but why does that have to be a bad thing? Cropped pixie cuts with well placed tapering will look the best on this type of face but don’t be afraid to ask your stylists opinion and experiment. Sometimes highlighting what you think are your flaws can actually do you wonders.
7. Half Up Do
If you’re not ready to show off the full extent of the roundness of your face then how about trying a half up do to see what you look like with your round cheeks on show first? This is a beautiful style and, if you leave a few strands loose from your up do, your face is still being frames slightly. You can put as much or as little hair as you want into your up do too so it’s worth experimenting. Some women suit having most of their hair up while others suit having very little up, it’s really all down to personal taste to don’t be afraid to try a few variations of this style out.
8. Long Layers
I mentioned before about mixed layers but I realise the variation in style isn’t for everyone. If you have long hair and are proud of it then you could always get simple long layers cut into your hair. They still draw attention away from your face while allowing you to truly make the most of your luscious locks. If you’re a bit nervous about this style then start off by having just a few layers cut in and gradually build them up.
9. Sleek Ponytails
Once again, why are you trying to hide away your pretty, round face? Why not show it off and make the most of your curves? Sleek ponytails help you do just that. Having all of your hair pulled back off of your face helps show off the true shape of your face. It also highlights the curve of your neck, the shape of your chin and allows people to see right into your eyes. Where’s the downside?
10. High Buns
We all love a beautiful bun, don’t even try to deny it. To instantly make your face look longer and therefore instantly slimmed down, pull your hair into a high bun on top of your head. The extra height will completely change the shape and look of your face and you get to flaunt this incredibly popular and sexy style too. Win, win!
11. Short Hair
I mentioned the bob hairstyle before but I want to reiterate just how great various short hairstyles can look on women with round faces. Forget that silly myth that they make your face look rounder – that’s miles from true! They really soften your face and make the most of your curvy cheeks. I’ll admit short styles do take a bit of trial and error to find your perfect length so I advise getting your stylist to just take a little hair off at a time until you’re happy with your new look.
12. Chignons
This is a great look for women with round faces. Of course, it also looks great on women with slim faces too but that’s not the point. The trick to making it work on a round face is to leave a few strands of hair loose the frame your face and soften your cheeks.
13. Messy Ponytail
If smooth and sleek isn’t your style then try wearing a messy ponytail instead. It will have all the same effects on your face and will also give your hair depth and texture, drawing more attention to that therefore highlighting your round face less. It really is a trial and error style – some women like it really messy, others just like a few stay locks of hair. It’s entirely down to you!
14. Long Locks
Having really long hair does wonders for a round face. It helps to elongate and slim down the look of the face and gives you one kick ass feature for people to look at. I love long hair, it’s one of the best looks if you ask me!
15. Classic Waves
We’ve covered curls and now it’s time to tell you why simple, classic waves are fantastic for round faces. Similar to curls, they soften the look of your face and give your hair volume and texture, instantly slimming out the look of your face. You can have tight waves, loose waves, half your hair waved or all of it. It’s great for making a statement and personalizing your style.
16. Sleek And Straight
Okay, I know, I know, now I am contradicting myself but trust me when I say it’s not for a good reason. You probably weren’t happy with me when I told you that straight hair wasn’t great for round faces which is true… to an extent. If you simply can’t stay away from having luscious smooth locks then try adding a bit of moose of gel to your hair when you’re finished styling it to rough it up a bit. The matte, unkept look with look fab with your smooth hair so you really get the best of both worlds.
17. Accessorize
If you want to draw attention away from the shape of your face with minimal fuss then an accessory is the perfect way to do just that. Simply pick one that goes with your outfit, slip it in a voila! No one will even be looking at your face.
18. Side Braid
I’m a big fan of the side braid, mostly because of how it completely transforms your look. It’s great because while it opens up your face it’s pretty enough to draw they eye so no one will care how round your face is.
19. Add Height
Pushing your pony tail or half up do skyward will instantly elongate your face. The extra height in your hair will make it appear fuller and thicker while slimming down the look of your face. This is a simple illusion that gives great results.
20. Tousled Hair
Simply tousling your hair whether it’s long, short, bobbed or shoulder length is fab for slimming down round faces. Just add a bit of mousse or gel and work your fingers through your hair. You can have your hair as mussed up as you like so it’s worth experimenting and finding out what looks good on you.
